Manchester City Legend Gundogan Returns to a Hero’s Welcome
Ilkay Gundogan, the former captain of Manchester City, made a triumphant return to the club on Friday after a season at Barcelona. The 33-year-old midfielder was greeted with a standing ovation from the home crowd when he came on as a substitute in Saturday’s match.
Gundogan is synonymous with success at City, having joined the club in 2016 and helping them win five Premier League titles during his first spell. Although he is unlikely to feature as prominently as he did previously due to his age, Guardiola welcomed his experience as City aims for an unprecedented fifth consecutive Premier League title.
“We know each other for many years and he knows exactly what he needs to do,” said Guardiola. “I am very pleased he is back.”
Gundogan’s return to City was marked by a sense of homecoming. Whether it was stepping off the team coach, taking part in the warm-up, or entering the pitch to the cheers of the home fans, Gundogan was beaming with joy, reflecting the immense happiness he felt at returning to his former club.
“When I arrived a couple of days ago, I was already joking with the players, even before I signed the contract,” Gundogan said. “It feels like I have never been away. It feels like home. I have so much happiness to play again for this amazing club. I am very proud to be back.”
