Carolina for Kibera: Quality Health Services in Kibera slum
Access to quality health services is a significant challenge for residents of Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest slums. Many families struggle to find affordable and reliable healthcare, leaving them vulnerable to a range of health issues. Recognizing this critical need, Carolina for Kibera is stepping in to make a difference.
Founded by the late Tabitha Atieno Festo, a registered nurse from Kibera, Tabitha Medical Clinic is a community-based medical clinic that provides primary healthcare and youth-friendly services to Kibera residents in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Tabitha Clinic offers quality health services to all residents on a sliding-fee scale. The clinic treats approximately 20,000 patients each year (over 100 daily) and offers basic laboratory, pharmaceutical, and children’s health services. The clinic is one of the only medical facilities in Kibera that staffs two full-time physicians.

At Carolina for Kibera, we are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Kibera’s residents by providing essential and quality health services right in the heart of their community. Our commitment is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their economic status, has access to the care they need.
We offer a variety of affordable and quality services, including:
- Children’s Clinic Services: Ensuring that the youngest members of the community receive the medical attention they need to grow up healthy and strong.
- Family Planning: Providing education and resources to help families plan their futures and improve their quality of life.
- General Health Services: Offering a range of medical services to address the diverse health needs of Kibera’s residents.

Carolina for Kibera clinic is more than just a healthcare provider; we are a partner in the community’s journey towards better health. By bringing these crucial and quality health services directly to Kibera, we aim to reduce the barriers to healthcare and empower residents to lead healthier lives.
The organization is paying special attention to how to create and sustain successful public-private partnerships, especially around using data at the local level. It’s also examining how this clinic fits into the larger healthcare system of the community.
