Small businesses in Kibera: Maxmilla’s story of resilience

Kibera, Nairobi’s largest informal settlement, is a place where resilience meets small businesses that persevere daily challenges. Its residents navigate a complex landscape with determination and innovation, carving out livelihoods in various ways.

Maxmilla’s Journey: Selling hope in second-hand clothes

Maxmilla is a determined entrepreneur in Kibera, specializing in selling second-hand clothes, known locally as “mtumba.” Her inventory includes boxers, pajamas, tops, and t-shirts sourced from Nairobi town and occasionally from Gikomba market. Notably absent from her offerings are trousers, considered too expensive for both purchase and resale within the community.

Maxmilla’s husband plays a crucial role in her business, procuring clothes for sale while she manages day-to-day operations. In a recent interview with Elkanah Nyauma of Mzee Elkanah TV, she shared insights into her challenges. “Life is not easy,” she said, highlighting the unpredictable nature of sales and the constant struggle to make ends meet.

Diverse small business landscape: Thriving amidst adversity

Beyond Maxmilla’s venture, Kibera boasts a diverse entrepreneurial landscape that reflects its dynamic community spirit. Artisans create and sell handmade crafts, weaving cultural expression with economic opportunity. Local restaurants and food stalls offer affordable meals, serving as vital social hubs where residents gather to share stories and meals alike.

Shoe businesses thrive in Kibera, providing repairs and sales of both new and second-hand footwear. Moreover, second-hand goods businesses flourish, offering a range of electronics, books, and household items at affordable prices. These enterprises are lifelines for residents facing financial constraints, providing essential goods that are otherwise inaccessible.

The spirit of resilience in small businesses

Despite the hardships they face, entrepreneurship thrives as a beacon of hope and opportunity. Maxmilla’s story exemplifies this spirit—her journey is a testament to the strength and perseverance that define life in Kibera.
